Friday Roundup | Halloween Edition

Well the 3 miles daily was a short lived endeavor. As it turns out, my body needs a slower build to the weekly mileage. No biggie. I’m listening to what my body has to say and am setting myself up for long term success.

The Rundown

  • Saturday, October 25: 3.41 miles. 37m 40s. I swear post-rest-day runs are magic. It’s like I get two days worth of epiphanies instead of just one! Physically, I felt strong too. It’s always nice running at a time of day when I can see the trail.

  • Sunday, October 26: 3.11 miles. 33m 20s. I caught the last of the aspen leaves on a section of trail that I haven’t done in over a year. Honestly, this run felt more like wandering around in a fever dream than anything, but Sampa and I had a nice sprint on the way back down and that felt really good. Bonus: according to Strava, I set a new mile PR with a time of 7:43! Yes, there was a lot of downhill carrying me through that time. Yes, I’m still counting it.

  • Monday, October 27: 4.2 miles. 51m 32s. Halloween run with Provo WOW. It’s getting dark early these days, so we redirected from our usual summer route. I think it will always amaze me how much easier a run feels when it’s paired with a yap session. But my calves were feeling a bit sore.

  • Tuesday, October 28: 2 miles. 24m 32s. Here’s where I finally gave in to the twinge developing in my left foot. Nothing serious, but enough that I think it’s wise to increase my weekly mileage just a smidge more gradually. I justified the step down from 3 miles to 2 by telling myself that I had run 4 miles the day before, so it evened out. I shouldn’t need justifications to listen to my body, but I’m going with what gets the result I’m looking for. Whatever it takes to convince myself to take care of myself.

  • Wednesday, October 29: 1.5 miles. 23m. Another take-it-easy-day, with a shake-out 1.5 miles and extra stretches when I got home.

  • Thursday, October 30: 4 miles. 50 m. Whoops. I set out to do another 2-miler and got ahead of myself. Instead of an easy 2 I ran a hilly 4 but I felt so good I just couldn’t stop. My foot feels fine when I’m actually running, which makes me wonder if I hurt it some other way. Regardless, this was the last day before rest day and I had taken the last two days easy, so I figured I could afford stepping it up a bit. Also I think it’s time to get an actual watch.

  • Friday, October 31: Rest day! Getting my lazy on now so I’m fully prepared for trick-or-treating with my kids, followed by our traditional viewing of Coco while eating the candy leftover from my inevitable overpreparation. I can’t help it. I’m terrified of running out of candy for trick-or-treaters on Halloween.

What I Read

  • The Beauty of Friction” by Rahaf Harfoush. The article is a quick read but packs a punch. Harfoush explores the role of friction in society, how it brings us together and the unexpected ways that the inconvenient creates meaning.
